Many expert assessments of effective mobilization to fight climate change indicate that governments must be the major drivers of that effort. As citizens, our critical role is to scrutinize government activities, to advocate for effective legislation, and to ensure that we elect officials committed to creating that legislation.
Our local governments set energy standards for government buildings including schools as well as enforcing building requirements for new development. They operate local mass transit and set land use policies that effect water quality, the electric grid, and the tree canopy
State government can constrain local policy options, set renewable energy policy, regulate utilities, and respond to the increasing statewide climate impacts.
The actions of our Federal Government impact all of us in the United States and the world. Our national commitment to renewable energy, clean air and water standards, rigorous policies to reduce carbon emissions, and increased scientific research will determine nothing less than the survival of our planet.
